The New Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church was organized in May of 1946 at the home of founding Pastor, Reverend W. M. Brawner and his wife, first lady, Sis. Lillian Brawner. The address was 2527 West Warren Boulevard. Charter members were Rev. W. M. Brawner, Sis. Lillian Brawner, Sis. Zetta Hughes, Rev. Osborne, Deacon Irving, Sis. Julia Irving, Deacon Clarence Cobb, Sis. Ruby Cobb, and Sis. Harriet Carter. Services were held at the homes of church members until arrangements were made with the Wallace Funeral Home, 2010 West Lake Street to hold church services in their chapel.
In 1949, the Lord blessed and enabled the church to move into our first church home at 240 North Western Avenue. The church prospered as auxiliaries were organized and several deacons and ministers were ordained, including Rev. Calvin Lee Bryant Sr. The church continued to grow in number and soon the congregation outgrew the building on Western Avenue.
On Sunday, May 29, 1959 the New Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church marched into its? second church home at 1306 South Kedvale Avenue, and the church became known as the Kedvale New Mount Zion Missio
nary Baptist Church. In September of 1973 our beloved founder and pastor, Rev. W.M. Brawner went home to be with the Lord. During this time Rev. Calvin Lee Bryant Sr. provided pastoral leadership for the the church and was officially ordained Pastor on Sunday, December 8, 1974. Sis. Mary Bryant became the first lady of the church and served faithfully in the choir, on the Mother?s Board, Women?s Mission, and the Sunday School department.
During the early years of Rev. Calvin Bryant?s pastorate he was greatly aided by the faithfulness and dedication of Deacon Dobbie White. Pastor Bryant ordained many deacons and ministers including three of his sons; Rev Raphael Bryant, Rev. Calvin Lee Bryant, Jr and Rev Michael Bryant. Under the leadership of Pastor Calvin Bryant, midweek prayer meetings and a weekly bible study were established. Other significant ministries that were began and flourished; Vacation Bible School, Street Evangelism, mission conferences, neighborhood health fairs, neighborhood food distribution, clothing drives, Men?s Ministry, Women?s Mission, and WAM (Womens Action Ministry).
After several years of planning and construction, Pastor Bryant?s vision for a new church facility came to fruition, and on Sunday, August 11, 2002, the congregation marched into our new church facility, directly adjacent to the old sanctuary on Kedvale. Truly, ?The Lord hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad?, Psalm 126:3.
Pastor Bryant served faithfully as pastor of Kedvale New Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church for over 39 years. On May 5, 2014, the Lord called Pastor Calvin Lee Bryant Sr. from labor to reward. Soon after, in June 2014 a Pulpit Committee was formed with the goal of selecting a Pastor candidate to be presented to the full congregation for confirmation. Rev. Dr. E.R. Williams, pastor of the South Park Baptist Church in Chicago, provided consistent, thoughtful guidance and encouragement during that important time. The Pulpit committee was comprised of the three associate ministers, three deacons, and four lay members.
On Friday, August 1st the Pulpit Committee voted and selected Rev. Michael Willis Bryant to be the next pastor of Kedvale New Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church. On Sunday, August 10th the church voted and confirmed Rev. Michael Willis Bryant as the third Pastor in the history of the church. Sis. Larraine Bryant became the first lady and has faithfully served the church. The formal Pastoral Installation was held on Friday, November 7, 2014 and concluded on Sunday, November 9, 2014. Led by the Holy Spirit, Pastor Michael Bryant has focused on reaching out to the family and the community. His first act as pastor was to ask church members to gather in groups of four after Sunday morning service to pray for continued unity among church members.
On Sunday, May 29,2016, Pastor Michael Bryant led the congregation in our first outdoor church service on the grounds of the 1300 block of Kedvale. It was a joyous occasion. The choirs sang praises to the Lord, and Pastor Michael Bryant preached a powerful message to a crowd of church members, visitors, neighborhood residents and friends that continued to expand as the service continued. Afterwards, church members socialized and shared a meal with guests.
We praise God for allowing Kedvale New Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church to do the work of the Lord for 70 years. We believe that God will continue to bless us as we seek to do His will on Earth as it is in Heaven.
